Avenging Space

Formed strictly as a studio project in 1998 the band has used different musical influences to create their own sound. The debut album (still in stock at dDrecords) is filled with daring musical references, which reveal the personality and the background of each individual member.

RENE AHOUD

As the album's producer Rene contributes not only his technical expertise as the project's only certified sonologist and owner of the Klankbeeld Amsterdam studio, but foremost he adds to the album the qualities of an outstanding musician and a refined composer. Some of Rene's past musical projects include composing soundscapes for theatrical dance and performing arts projects, as well as working as a technician for other pop productions; making this album the first ever project, under which he gladly would sign his name.

CLAUDIO TAPIA

Born in Chile he was raised in the Netherlands and in the United States.

As a teenager he began composing and performing with several bands in the state of Texas. Partly due to his diverse background Claudio soon became aware of what he now calls “the music in words” – the power of language, as expressed in Avenging Space’s The Tyranny of the Weak. The composition is built around Pablo Neruda’s view that humanity might eventually lose everything, itself even, but that it will never lose the words.

MARTIN van LIER

A self-proclaimed ‘retro-rocker’ with a fascination for electronic music.

Martin’s background as a rock guitarist is a clear presence on the Avenging Space album. He adds a warmth and an organic quality that pulls the work away from a mere technical project and places it in a category of its own. Martin’s contribution to the album in many instances is one of closing the gap that too often exists between electronics and the blues guitar.

Noon - BLEAK OUTPUT

What to expect from a young Polish guy who preferred Brian Eno's MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS over Michael Jackson 's THRILLER when he was like, 12 years old ? His father, a real music-lover and always on the lookout for new things put him on this trail.. Unusual music with a strong mood. Emotion. The next thing was discovering samplebased music. After being swept away by people like PORTISHEAD and especially the instrumental hip-hop of DJ Shadow and DJ Krush in the '90s he started out making his own music using just his PC and, after a while, a turntable. [The Technics 1200.. the NOON-model, so to speak..] The final addition to his setup was a MPC2000 sampler, which became affordable after being signed by dDrecords, who discovered him on the internet around 1998.

The main ingredient of his music is a strong mood... His music is unlike Viktor Sjoberg 's tracks but he shares the same attitude nevertheless. He knows what he wants and keeps digging the crates till he finds those samples that will help him shape those feelings into music. He has the rare ability to give a sampler a soul, to control it instead of being controlled by it. He simply knows what he wants and works those tracks until they are right. It is not techno or hip-hop. It is not dance. It is trippy, but no triphop. Introspective and contemplative are words that come to mind when listening to his tracks. Soundtracks for unmade movies... Twelve years after the initial release this album still sounds fresh.

BLEAK OUTPUT, his first album, was released in 2000 by dDrecords and became an instant classic in the Polish sub-culture and abroad. It was re-released in Poland several times, incl. a vinyl version. Viktor Sjoberg - AUDIO ARCHITECTURE

Viktor Sjoberg, born in 1981 used to live in the small, quiet Swedish community of Pixbo. Back then, he was very young and sampling everything that made sounds and even some things that didn't... He got into musicmaking by sampling things such as plastic bags and rubbing a little microphone against the speakers. This lead to a rave review in a local newspaper and strange looks from the other kids at summercamp. After this he really got going, beatmining, digging for music everywhere he could, absorbing all kinds of influences and constantly developing, constructing and re-constructing his own musical ideas into what they are now. Right from the start his presence on the internet was strong.

And that's where dDrecords found him late '90s, only 16 years old but already producing impressive music that went way beyond the surface. His inspirations ranged from hip hop producer Peanut Butter Wolf to filmmaker David Lynch and author Jack Kerouac via the legendary Lee 'Scratch' Perry. His music is moody, mainly because it's based on introspection and emotion, on the mysteries that are buried deep inside us. It's beat-orientated though, but minimalistic, beats and melodies both stripped to the bone. Sometimes it is like listening to movie soundtracks for which the movie still has to be made - but who knows what tricks he has up his sleeve ? Today, you can track Viktor on his blog. His latest release, Nov. 2010, is Breakfast in America, available on iTunes and vinyl.

His first album AUDIO ARCHITECTURE was produced in 2000 but never officially distributed. This due to financial difficulties (the internet bubble burst..).

Wood - Choice Cuts (compilation)

When constructing a building all kinds of wood will be used; boards, logs, beams... the same happened, musicwise, when compiling this CD, each track has it's specific place and functions as an integral part of the whole.

Two independant labels from opposite ends of the world discovered they were more or less fishing in the same pond, so to speak. They decided to join forces. The first joint release is WOOD : CHOICE CUTS, a compilation of 16 tracks, a total of 79 minutes of music, 99% of which was never before released.

The musical styles on this compilation are diverse, covering a broad spectrum ranging from minimalistic and introvert moody soundscapes to uptempo Drum & Bass. Most tracks are downbeat though, and sampling and the use of found-sound prevails in all tracks. WOOD shows the maturity of a new breed of producer, who're using sampling no longer as a replacement for authentic instrumentation [or genuine inspiration], but demonstrating here its validity as a standalone instrument which can help produce excellent music in the right hands. These are not the loop and paste methods of early years, but the precise orchestration of composers who have made the sampler their weapon of choice.
